Default Can't See Network Adapters

man, what the hell happened here? Opened my Network
Neighborhood. And there are NO connections listed even
though I use VPN, wireless networking, and Lan
conention. I get the the following message:
"....the network connections folder was unable to
retrieve the list of network adapters on your
machine...."
How do I get them back?
