I got 10 client machines and one router, the router is
acting as the gateway and switch. All client machine are
plugged into this router. Clients are able to share files
and access Internet through this router switch. However,
there is one machine that is fail to do so. It can ping
to the router gateway and share files with other machine
on the network. However, it is not able to get on the
Internet as the other clients do. The setting is exactly
the same as all other machine on the network. It is using
a static ip inherited from a old computer which has
removed from the network. I am sure there are no
duplication of ip address on the network. There is no
firewall or Anti-virus software running on the machine
neither on the network. What likely is the cause of this
problem?
It is running under a Workgroup. I tried to plug the
machine to another port on the switch, but it doesn't make
any different.
I have been experiencing the same exact problem you describe here for
the past week, on only ONE computer on my network running Windows XP
Pro. I have a very similar network setup as what you describe here. I
have always kept all computers up-to-date with all security patches and
antivirus signature updates.
For the past week I have been unable to access the Internet with this
ONE computer. Neither I.E. 6.0, nor Netscape 7.1 or AOL 8.0 have been
able to access the internet either through my broadband router or by
dial-up. None of my web enabled apps on this PC have been able to access
the 'net either. I can ping other internet servers and even log into
other computers within my network. All other computers on my network can
ping this computer and log into it as well without any problem. All the
other computers continue to work fine with full access to the internet.
I have scanned several time with my antivirus software as well as with
Ad-aware, PestPatrol, several virus removal utilities and Spybot Search
& Destroy and found no reason for this problem.
After a lot of hair pulling and even rolling back two days worth using
Windows XP System Restore. I was ready to re-format my hard drive and
re-start from scratch. But tonight I decided to try System Restore once
again and rolled back two more days worth. Lo and behold, It looks like
I may have fixed my problem. I still don't know what was preventing only
ONE computer from accessing the internet, but it appears to be working now.
I would recommend that you back up all your data and then try rolling
back using System Restore. Make sure that you go back far enough to a
day when you were not having this problem. It worked for me. I hope it
works for you!
Also, make sure that you scan your computer using good reputable and
up-to-date antivirus and adware/spyware removal utilities. You will be
amazed as to how many adware/spyware junk as well as browser hijackers
you can find in your PCs.

thank you for your sugguestion, but my PC is brand new and
never been on the network. I don't think it makes any
different with the system restore.

Have you tried temporarily removing the static IP address and activating
your DHCP client so as to obtain a dynamic IP address from your DHCP
server? This might help you determine if there is some other kind of
conflict with that IP address that you may not be aware of. I would
also check to see if the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall is ON.
All new PC's I have seen come with this Microsoft firewall turned ON and
that could be acting up and giving you problems. To see if the WindowsXP
ICF is ON,
1. Click on Start/Connect to/Show All Connections
2. then double Click on your LAN Connection Icon
3. See if the status shows as "Connected"
4. Click on Properties and then click on the Advanced Tab
5. At the Internet Connection Firewall section UNCHECK the box.
While you are at it, also check to make sure that the Client for
Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing are installed along with
your TCP/IP Protocol.
As you know, you will need to be logged in as administrator or
administrator equivalent to do this.
