Default AOL new window selection hangs up computer

I have XP family version, Zone Alarm Firewall, Linksys
router, Mellenium Cable connection and AOL 9.0. AOL
broadband signs on OK and I can read mail. But------ when
I select any topic (new window) the window comes up blank
like its waiting for it to load. Thereafter I have
trouble closing down AOL, and if I am successful doing
so, I can no longer connect to the internet, for example
use Internet Explorer, and I cannot shut down my
computer. To shut down, I must just turn off power.
Disabling my firewall seems to have no effect.

Hello

Remove AOL and try re-installing it. or try installing
version 8 and see what happens.

I have reinstalled several times and have even used a
second computer with same system configuration and always
get same results. I tried phone dialup. It allowed me to
bring up one window OK but then hung up on the next.

I'm beginning to suspect some problem in the cable train
somewhere.
