Default You suggestions please

Floppy disks which function just fine one day are becoming unreadable the
next day (a message appears on the screen indicating that the disk is not
formatted). Seeking help on how to get the files from the floppy or what to
do to make the floppies readable again.

I have had problems reading/writing floppies with XP. The same disk that
Win98 or Dos would happily read will often be snubbed by XP. Of course this
is not necessarily true in your case.

Since floppy drives aren't mainstream any longer, the quality control
has fallen off considerably.

You could try insert, read, reinsert, read, etc. I've had luck
sometimes with that and once it starts reading, get your data off ASAP.
You could try compressed air to clean out the drive, maybe dust on
the head is a problem.

You may have to buy a new floppy drive, but as I said above, because of
lousy QC, I've installed new drives that wouldn't read ANY of a prior
drives floppy writing, so if that doesn't work, you can at least take
the drive back.

Floppy diskette reliability has slipped considerably when used in computers
running Windows NT/2000/XP, even the factory-formatted ones. The exceptions
were those that were re-formatted by computers running NT/2000/XP, in spite
of the fragility of the media and greater potential for loss of the magnetic
coercivity.

Replace the drive. You'll need:

1. A drive ($10).
2. A hand that fits a screwdriver.

I realized after certain patterns of discarding lots floppies, between
OS uses, that XP has some problem with floppies.
