Default XP reinstallation and activation

I have and older compaq computer which had win 98. I have upgraded to win xp
some time ago. I do not use this computer anymore. I have another dell
computer with win 2000 which I use. How can I cancel activation of XP on
older compaq computer which I do not use and reinstall and activate XP on
newer Dell computer legally. Thanks for your help

You can't "deactivate" as that's not part of MS' flawed activation
program. Just load it on to the new computer and it will activate on
line without any problems even if it's a generic OEM version.

There is no such thing as "canceling activation," nor is there any
need to do anything like it.

Your copy of XP is an Upgrade version? In that case, it's retail, not
OEM, and you are free to move it to another computer as desired.
Simply remove it from the old computer (formatting it is probably the
easiest way to do that) and install it on the new one. After
installation, just activate normally. If it's been at least 120 days
since last activation, it should work over the internet just as it did
before. Worst case, if fewer than 120 days, you'll be prompted to do
it by a quick and easy voice call.
