Default xp home edition - clean install

I wanted to reinstall and start over with xp home edition (not upgrade) so I
put in my disk and restarted, booted from cd. Setup started (blue screen)
and in a little bit got setupreg.hiv could not be loaded. Error code 32768.

What does this mean and how can I get a re install? I tried searching on
google and not much came up.

TIA

Does the system have a SATA controller ?
If yes, you have to supply the disk controller driver whiles installing the OS.

No SATA controller.

Asus motherboard (3 yr old) I've done it before about 18 months ago the
last time with no problem.

Brand?

Could be an overflow error (memory) or something on the cd (wipe with a soft
cloth) among other things. "32768" likely is not an error code but is 32mb
and would refer to the overflow of a 32mb buffer.

Did you try more than once?
Dirt/fingerprint on CD or dusty CD player lens is a prime suspect.
