XP Boots Up only to Splash Screen

I am running XP Home Edition in Boot Camp on a new iMAC. All seemed well
until SP3. Now, when I try to boot up, the Spash Screen comes up with the
progress bars and never gets further. I have to try a cold start a couple of
times, and sometimes it will then boot up normally. A restore point doesn't
help. A Microsoft technican added some update that changed a lot of registry
settings, and it worked ok for a while, but now the problem is back again.
The Boot Camp is current.

Any thoughts?

See if you can get the update that fixed things and run it again.
