Write protected flash drives?

Hello Group
Recently I discovered that I can't transfer files to my flash drives
as it says its write protected. I tried to transfer the flash drive
files to hard drive so that I can format the disk.
What surprises is the cut and paste does not work any document that I
want to transfer to another drive can't be done. i.e Flash drive to
hard drive.
What is more surprising is when I tried to format the particular flash
drive or USB drive it cannot be even formatted as there some sort of
write protection.
I am rather perplexed how could it happen as its uncommon to my
experience and I never put any write protection to this particular
drive nor even have any idea how to do it either.
Is there anybody that could explain how these things happen and what
can be done to sort this out. I just want to clean this USB drive so
that I can reuse it again.

Roy,

Do you have a write protect switch on the side of your flash drive? If so,
does it point to the closed padlock?

Hi Roy, how many files do you have in the root of your flash drive?
There is a problem in XP that it cannot write more than a certain
number of files in the root folder of any disk drive, try to move some
of them to newly created folder, and try again.

I had the same problem with my flash drives and that was the solution.
