Default Windows XP- Home Edition: Unable to logon

Hi,
When I start my PC, on the Welcome screen as I type in my password into the
account, I get a message logging off and does not log into my account. I have
tried starting in Safe Mode as well as last known good configuration.
I will appreciate if someone can assist in showing me a workaround.
Thanks.
Sanjiv

Have you tried System Restore while in Safe Mode? Go back to a date
prior to when this began.

Click Start / Help, then look for help on System Restore.

Hi, I cannot log on to the screen where I can click START- I cannot proceed
past the stage where I enter my password on my account.

This problem usually occurs when the file userinit.exe becomes
inaccessible, e.g. because of malware or because the partitions
were manipulated.

In some cases it is possible to log in as Administrator while in
Safe Mode. Can you do this?

If this is not possible then things may get a little messy. The cure
is not too painful if your machine is networked and can be
reached from another machine. If this is not the case then you
may have to install the disk as a slave disk in some other PC
for the repair process.

Thanks- I will try the slave disk route and let you know in a day or so how I
go.
