Default Windows update not checking for updates

My XPPro equiped laptop (work supplied) is not checking for updates even
though I have it configured to download updates but not to install
automatically. I can manually go to MS to detect updates that are
needed and can successfully install the updates with no errors but I
need it to check for updates daily which it does not do. Are there any
registry settings that I can check to make sure that I have the right
info to enable this feature? It has never worked and I've had the
laptop for 2 years now. Thank you in advance.

POI-
Microsoft issues updates on the second Tuesday of each month. Rarely do
they issue updates any other day.
You might be better off waiting to see if the latest and greatest
updates have issues before installing them.
Here is a link to MS e-mail notification service.
