Default Windows update - Failed Updates (failed to install)

Can anyone explain/resolve the reason why I can initiate and downlaod
windows XP updates - but when it comes to installing them - I get a
list (all 82 of them!) Failed to install.
" A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being
downloaded or installed"

but what on earth do I look for to determine what !!??

This is on a new Pc - just installed XP, installed the few programs
required, nothign out of the ordinary, but ! updates will not work! I
did have a problem earlier where it would not install win3.1 if I
remember right, plus one other program -this was when we first tried
to update - it had to install these before going in for the full
windows update to function, and these failed - but I managed ot
locate htem on another site and installed them individually, from then
on accessing and runing the Windows Update was good - cept now we're
down to this "install" problem! I'v tried taking down firewall and
anti-virus - then retrying the instal - still no luck!
Any ideas? p-lease .
