Windows Explorer initial delay on expanding folders?

I asked this before, and think only one person responded, so I'd appreciate
more input on this, if someone would be kind enough to try it and respond.

After you boot up Windows XP (or reboot, for that matter), and wait a minute
or two for it to settle down (i.e. no disk actitivity).....

Has anyone else noticed that when you first go to use Windows Explorer, and
select the main drive C:, and then expand it (to see all the folders
underneath it), it takes a fair amount of time for it to remove all those
spurious "+" signs (spurious, for non-existent subfolders), and finally
settle down so you can actually use it?

I've got a 1.6 GHz computer here, and it seems to take 5 - 10 seconds to
finally settle down so you can actually use explorer. Once done, it is
pretty quick afterwards, however, (when you invoke windows explorer again),
as it has apparently been cached (perhaps by that prefetch thing).

I am just curious if this is unique behavior to my computer.

Me too. Same problem drawing my various toolbar icons initially too. The
cause AFAIK is that it takes XP a long, LONG time after you think it is
loaded before it actually finishes...the CPU is *very* busy for maybe 3-4
minutes. Once the CPU gets up to normal idle percentage things open rapidly
even on first opening.

I've never seen such behavior, Bill... and I've been using XP for over
6 years.

Toolbar icon delays? I haven't noticed that.

Even after waiting, say 3 or 4 minutes, upon initially opening windows
explorer, selecting C:, and then expanding all the folders underneath it,
there is a very noticeable time delay (like 5- 10 secs) for explorer to
finally settle down and remove those superfluous "+" signs (at the node of
every single folder - superfluous, in that many of these folders do not even
have any subfolders). After that, it's pretty quick from there on out,
until the next reboot. (I'm pretty sure some of this weird explorer
behavior (superfluous + signs at every node) started with IE6 and its newer
DLLs, based on what I experienced with Win98SE).

Again, I've only got a 1.6 GHz computer (and maybe that's part of it).
