Default Windows cannot find the file %SystemRoot%\Installer\{<Insert GUID>

Lost all Microsoft Office related icons on desktop (generic icon instead) as
well as Windows Messenger live

the file that the system complains about (in the directory mentionned in the
subject of this posting) does exist and access rights are set ok

I have no idea what is the problem, installer service and RPC are working
impossible to modify anything in the above mentionned directory as error
messager pops up ( that includes trying to copy another station's
windows\installer folder ..

Any help appreciated
