For about two months now, my machine will not stay in stand by
mode nor will it shut down after the appropriate time of inactivity.
Something 're-awakens' the machine after just a few minutes of
stand by mode. Once, while I was using the machine, it initiated
the hibernation shut down process. There was no Alert/Cancel
message prior to this and it would not respond to keyboard or
mouse input when I tried to stop the process.
Can't think of a good way to search for a solution.
Current settings:
Turn Off Monitor: 10 min.
Turn Off Hard Disk: 15 min.
System Stand-by: 15 min.
System Hibernates: 1 hour
Those times had been a bit longer before.
This used to work flawlessly.
There are no pending daily scans except for daily antivirus update
and Microsoft critical update alerts.
Avira AntiVir and Windows Defender are active.
Virus and other malware scans have been negative.
Can someone help me out with this?

Your problem is likely related to Antivir. I've had similar issues with
hibernation/shutdown and haven't found a method to address the awakening.
Best I could do is to have the monitor turned off after XX minutes. I
suspect that your screensaver stops working as well.
Test my logic if you care to.
Let the system hibernate. Once it's awakened, check for an Antivir update
(right click on the systray icon, start update) to see if it will
re-hibernate, although it'll be re-awakened eventually.
Wish I had the silver bullet to the problem but at least I can identify why
your system comes out of hibernation.

i don't think that using
standby and hibernation together
could function flawlessly and instead are
the likely cause of the conflict your are
incurring now.
my suggestion is to
turn off / disablee the standby powermode
and use a screensaver instead and with the
same timings as you had used for standby, eg
15 minutes.
however, leave the hibernation powermode
setting enable for a period a bit longer
than your screensaver activation, eg 60
minutes more or less. My preference
would be 20 minutes of inactivity for
the computer to go into hibernation.
the monitor and disk times could be
timed just before hibernation "if" you
really think you need to set them
anyways....
but when the machine hibernates,
then those devices will
automatically powerdown as well.

No. However I did recently instal a new Logitech LX3 optical Corded mouse.
I installed the driver and software that came with the package.
I think there was a driver update available immediately, which was installed.

The system Does NOT awaken from Hibernation - it can't. It is powered Off.
It Does awaken repeatedly from Stand By.
If you'll look at the Power Options Properties dialog box, you'll see that
Stand-By and Hibernation can be set individually and can work together.
My earlier time settings makes that a little clearer.

I have suspected AntiVir. There was a software update about two months ago.
There is a new option for Boot Records scan. When I first updated, I chose to
install that option with the update. It later caused some problems, although I
don't remember what. I uninstalled the software completely and did a fresh
install WithOUT the boot records option.
Have you seen anything at a forum or other newsgroup about recent
Standby problems caused by the latest version of AntiVir?
Unfortunately I've not found a fix for the AntiVir quirk. I gave up on it
as I was happy to have my screen saver function properly and have the
monitor turn off to save some miles on the LCD. I'd actually rather leave
my system running (easier on the HDD) and I like AntiVir enough to accept
it's quirk.
Since I'm still curious regarding the quirk, I've asked the question in the
AntiVir forums:

Very Good! I wasn't sure if there was a forum. I also deactivated the
automatic update feature and thought that might fix the problem.
After turning that Off yesterday, my system Did go into Standby
and remained in stanby until the hibernate time was reached, at
which point it did go into hibernation. I thought I had it fixed,
but today it awoke from standby again. I'll check the forum for
responses to your post. Please let me know if you discover
something useful.
