I got email from a friend and in there are pictures.
When I right-click on the picture and choose SAVE AS:
this is the default name:
!cid_image001.jpg@01C85C0D[1]
what the heck does that mean ?
So it looks to me like not an ATTACHMENT to the email - but rather a
pointer to ... somwhere ... my concern is:
is that just a spyware site trying to get info from me /a cookie on my pc.

It means that either this email is malware or your friend sent it
weirdly. I'd be cautious and 1) delete it most certainly without
clicking on the attachment; 2) ask your friend if s/he sent this. It's
possible that your friend's computer is infected or s/he just needs to
learn how to share pictures with you.
Unless you are absolutely certain of the provenance of the attachment
you should absolutely not open it! With the use of a proper mail
screening utility it shouldn't even have made it to your machine, it
should have been deleted on the mail server. If you are certain of the
provenance and if you wish to view it you should have your AV program
scan it to make sure that it doesn't contain any viruses. If it's
clean, and if you know it to be a jpg picture then rename the file
extension and you will then be able to open it with your default jpeg
viewer, you can rename it as image001.jpg. or right click on it and
select Open with...

I have a number of pictures in my Pictures folder that have !cid in the
title and are not malware.

Hi Bobb,
I see that all the time when posting images or sound bits on a test
multimedia site. It's just a form of a URL that allows references to
messages within other body parts of messages. CID stands for
"Content-ID". When I save a draft of a test post, my mail client embeds
the file from my hard drive into the message post and creates the CID
reference. Otherwise the file would wind up referencing the file on
your hard drive; something that would not be available to anyone you
send it to. Usually the file name remains intact, but there are times
when it doesn't, but the file data is complete.

Why do you say that ? ( I'm not arguing - just trying to learn)
I did email the sender - no reply yet.
I'm running NAV - up to date.
[ What I FIRST tried when I saw its properties - block all internet
activity at firewall. Saved email message as html. Opened html file and
where the pictures should be - empty boxes with a red x in upper left. (
As I thought would happened since I had stopped network. So, it IS
fetching them when on my screen ??)
Then (with network still off) , I opened email - FORWARD, right-clicked
on each photo then COPY.
Opened Paint and PASTED - saved file to a folder. Did that for each of the
17 pictures. I got all the photos saved as bmp's without accessing network
again. ]

Kinda lost me there .... So when the recipient reads the email, it is
fetching the file from YOUR PC ????
No, the file is embedded in the email. The reference is to prevent the
email from fetching from the original location. So it WON'T try to look on
his hard drive.

Well, you snipped the explanation, so I can understand why you're lost.
Read it again. The CID is given by the mail client used for the
attachment. Usually the name will remain intact, but for some reason in
your case that isn't happening. Sometimes different clients interpret
differently.

I come across this all of the time.
Just save the darned image and then scan it with your "favorite"
AV pgm. Most likely the default name is just part of the coding.
Just re-name the bloody picture to what ever you want. There can
be malicious stuff carried by email, but I would lay odds that
this is not one of them thar baddies.
