Default Web Based Newsgroup

What is the web-based newsgroup? How can I
see/use it? Do I want to use it? How would I access it?
Just curious about it.

Mike

You're best off sticking to using a newsreader.

MS has its newsgroups on the web; however, find a post and tracking one is a
LOT harder to do than using a newsreader.

It's just a html interface for what you are viewing now, (except in your web
browser). Many people have never heard of a newsreader, don't know what it
does, or how to use it.

Depending on how it's handled it can be good or bad. I expect because it
allows the insertion of ads in the page, someone can make money from it.

It also helps some "forums" to appear as if they have a lot of posts by
simply directing newsgroup posts into their forums, and usually directing
any forum posts back to the original newsgroup.

It also allows users to customise their profiles with annoying animations,
signatures that overwhelm any post they reply to and dancing banana gifs.

Basically another way to clog up the internet and waste resources.
IMHO naturally ;-)

P.S. try doing a search for your newsgroup name and forum, and I expect you
will find some of your newsgroup posts on some of these forums.

It is not a web-based newsgroup. What you are probably referring to is
that these newsgroups are also available on Microsoft web sites.

Ugh! Stay as far away as possible. It's terrible, and much inferior to
the way you are currently getting there--via a newsreader.

> Do I want to use it?

You have to decide for yourself. My recommendation is a very strong
"no!"

1. If you're asking about web access to newsgroups, a good example is Google
Groups.

Use of Google Groups (and similar) is discouraged for several reasons:
they're slow to show posts for one.

2. If you're asking about a web-based forum, that's often called a "blog."

Thanks, Ken. It seems that all you MVP experts are using them and I
wondered if it were a more direct way of getting stuff to you. OK. Thanks
for the info.

Mike

Few if any MVPs use a web-based interface to access these newsgroups. What
makes you think so? Or did I misunderstand you?

Using *them?* You mean using the web-based newsgroup interface?

Au contraire! With very few exception, most MVPs use a
newsreader--either Outlook Express or one of the alternatives. I
recommend that everyone do the same.
