Using XP Home backup utility, but restore on Vista Home Premium

Recently got a new computer with Vista. I think I've transferred all the
files I want from the old computer to the new one, but just to be safe, I'd
like to save a copy of the data on the old computer in case I missed
something important. If I back up using XP backup, will I be able to restore
using anything that comes with Vista?

I don't know but if it was my own important data then I would
not rely on the advice given by a stranger. I would test it for
myself - it won't take more than a few minutes!

Or rather than rely on the built in software in two different OS's to do
the job, find a 3rd party program that will do it. One that loads on
both OS's.

And if you don't have a good backup software now, then it might be time
to think about one. Acronis True Image can clone a HD, image a HD, or
backup files. And is XP/Vista compat.

You can get a 30 day trial and NewEgg has it on sale now and then under
$40.00

I really think I have transferred it all, but just can't bring myself to "pull the trigger" by formating the harddrive on the old one in preparation to selling it. While I have the ear of a soothsayer (you), am I correct that once formatted, the old drive will unreadable as far as my information is concerned and it will be safe to sell? In your role as MVP have you considered changing your name from Pegasus to Prometheus, as you are a big help. <g>. Thanks.

TO BIG AL: Ultimately, you have the best answer, but I was trying to avoid
spending any more money for something I may not regularly use since my new
laptop came with two harddrives installed and I can just copy my data files
to the 2nd harddrive as a normal routine. Thanks for your reply.

after day by vultures, as punishment for stealing the fire from the
gods?

About making your disk safe for disposal - this is another subject
altogether that warrants another post.

No. Formatting doesn't bother the data at all and it's (almost) trivial to
recover.

It's only a 15 day trial now. But still plenty of time to do what is
needed for transferring from one computer to another.

I like your copy idea and I do it too. But you know, I always seem to
forget some small file. Dang!!. Then and only then am I glad that I
make a complete image of my C: drive. I can go get that one little file.

Keep a eye, I bought my copy of Acronis when I found a sale for $4.95.
With shipping it was about $10. I could not pass it up. We
(meaning a few of my friends) thought we could use it as an upgrade to
the latest version but found out later they don't do that. But Version
9 works great. Still I keep an eye out for sales on places like nextag.

Hmmm. That's interesting. What about the old DOS command we used to use of
"format c: /u" for an Unconditional format? Would that work to to completely
erase it? I do have Norton Systemworks that will work on the old XP
operating system and it has a DOD Wipe feature. How about a format and then
a "wipe". That do it?
