when I was trying to add this group I found with google at this url http://groups.google.com/group/mozil...firefox/topics
when I type in mozilla.support.firefox nothing comes out when I put that
in thunderbirds usernet filter.
why is that?

Perhaps because that is a *private* Google Groups group (aka forum)
and not a copy of a Usenet newsgroup saved by Google. Google has
their own private groups that no NNTP servers carry, just like Yahoo
has their groups. These are more akin to forums than to Usenet
groups.
It could also be that the NNTP server to which you happen to connect
doesn't carry that newsgroup. For example, if you connected to
Microsoft's NNTP server (msnews.microsoft.com), you won't find any
mozilla groups because, well, obviously anything Mozilla is not a
Microsoft product. From your PATH header, it appears you are using
the Comcast-contracted Giganews service. They don't carry that
newsgroup. So try connecting to the Mozilla NNTP server. I don't use
Firefox or Thunderturd but recall the mozilla.org web site listed the
IP name for their NNTP server. Once you connect to it, get a list of
newsgroups to see if they carry that one.
mozilla.support.firefox is a Usenet newsgroup, not a newsserver. You'll
need to find a newsserver that carries the mozilla newsgroups.
