Default USB to serial port

Hi,

I´m having a problem to connect my pc to my cash register through a usb
port. I have installed the drives for usb serial cable, but still no "awser"
by the cash register. Usually it communicates with the pc through the COM1
port (in a laptop that have that port). Could someone help with this?
Thanks

The program you are using to work with the cash register, is it still
pointing to the COM1 port?

I'm not sure what you are using but somewhere in the program there my be a
preference setting where you can change what port to connect to.

Com 1 is not USB, you will need to repoint the communication to the USB port.

Have you installed the Windows XP driver for the USB to Com interface?

The program give me the possibility to change port, and I change it to the
port that is assign to usb (for exemple COM3, or COM5). In the program of the
cash register always shows COM1, but then I change, but no answer. With the
drives of the usb cable I have also a program where I can "make", for
example, COM5 to COM1. I did, but still no works.

Yes. I have installed all the drives that come with the cable.

USB to RS-232 cables vary widely in their compatibility. While I have one
that has never failed to work with any of the RS-232 peripherals that own,
others have reported varying degrees of variability. The main area of
concern is software that communicates directly with the serial port
registers rather than go through the windows drivers. Decent USB to RS-232
drivers should intercept such calls and redirect them, but the success rate
is highly variable.

I wish I could tell you made mine but it is totally unbranded.

No you don't, the driver should automagically do this for you.

I would suggest you contact the "cash register" company with this
problem. They have likely had it come up before, and will know what you
need to do.
