Default USB ports not working

A few days ago, my computer tried to hibernate when it wasn't connected to
the power cord, but couldn't. When I then started to use it, it gave me a
fatal error and I chose the option to go to last good configuration. At that
point in time, everything seemed OK, however, I later found out that I could
no longer connect my Blackberry, 3 of the jump drives I have and an external
HD. Only one jump drive works intermittently. Otherwise I get a message
"USB Device Not recognized". I have uninstalled and re-installed the USB
drivers, but to no avail. I checked the bios, and the drivers are all
active. I have my entire HD backed-up with Norton Ghost, but am afraid that
if I do a system re-install, then I won't be able to connect the external HD
because it connects through the USB port. Any suggestions? Thanks
