About 3 weeks ago (may 2008) I found that one of our pc's had lost its
usb functionality. Xp pro, installed and running for 3 years.
It has a ps/2 keyboard, ms usb optical mouse and occasionally has 2
different types of samsung flash based mp3 players connected.
After much fiddling I declared the usb controller dead (pc was 8 years
old) and swapped monitor, keyboards, mouse etc to another box running xp
pro fresh install.
3 weeks later I have the very same problem on this box.
That particular box had run xp pro for 3 years without a hitch with a
gaming usb keyboard and gaming usb mouse and a usb external drive with
no problems.
The symptoms (identical on both boxes);
Mouse is found to be frozen at log on to xp.
Inspection of device manager shows following under
universal serial bus controllers:
standard enhance pci to usb host controller
standard openhcd usb host controller
both with a black exclamation mark on a yellow back ground
right clicking either brings up a code 41 error message.
I have tried countess attempts at uninstalling them, rebooting, scanning
for hardware changes.
Updating drivers results in a message saying the driver is fine.
Uninstalled sp3 back to sp2.
Checked bios for usb settings enabled
Changed bios setting to enable/disbale pnp OS.
Added a registery key 'usb' with a 'dword value of
DisableSelectiveSuspend set to '1'
Also looked in registery for key that has 'filters' (?) but it did not
appear to exist.

I guess I should add; that is ALL there is this section, nothing else
except these two items. No USB hub or anything and the PC has 10 ports
altogether.
I cant believe I have had 2 separate PC's do this and there isn’t a
solution.

It still doesn't work
I tried it twice; the second time after removing the 2 host controllers
I'm still baffled as to what happened to the root hub........

Well I fixed it by a full reinstall.
Repair did nothing.
Now its working fine.
I'm still baffled as to what caused the root hubs to disappear.
I have taken the precaution of unticking the 'allow xp to switch this
device off' box in the root hubs properties.
where exactly is the "allow xp to switch device off" option? I'd rather not
have to go through reinstalling parts of my dell laptop--I have enough
problems with it as it is.

Control panel>Device manager>usb controllers
right click each hub and choose properties and then choose power
management
Make sure that the little box labelled:
'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'
is NOT checked.
