We're a small organization installing a Network, using Microsoft Network
2003. One of our computers has XP Home Edition & we have to upgrade it, in
order to connect with the Network. Any suggestions? What is the best way,
purchase the XP Professional Full version or is there an upgrade for this
particular purpose?
BTW: We have the same issue with Vista, we need to upgrade another computer
from Vista Home to Vista Business...
Whats the specific problem, or do you mean to join a domain?

My question is... how do I make this upgrade? Purchase the full version of
XP Professional, un-install the Home Edition, and do a complete new
installation? Or is there an upgrade method, just pop in the CD & go from
the Home Edition to the Professional edition? I was told that I could do
that by the Network consultant, but I don't believe it is possible? I think
I have to do a complete new installation?

You can use the XP Professional Upgrade. This will retain data and
settings. Normally this upgrade goes well but things can go wrong so if
there is any valuable data on the system do a backup. Best is to image the
system so it can be restored in it's entirety if needed, then do the
upgrade. Disable the AV prior to the upgrade and any other active scanning
programs. Make sure the system is clean of malware.
For Vista is it Home Basic or Home Premium? In either case you can use an
upgrade version of Vista Business. I believe you can do an in place upgrade
from Vista Home Basic, but from Vista Home Premium, it has to be a clean
install. You cannot use the Anytime Upgrade to go from any version of Vista
Home to Vista Business.
There are Vista specific newsgroups for Vista issues:

You can use the upgrade version of XP Pro with no problem.
