This machine has XP Pro SP2. Althought it has automatic update enabled I
performed a manual and find that .NET 2.0 and 3.0 are appropriate for
download. Two attempts lead to the same failure. The associated
knowledgebase item is KB11806. Looking up this number in the knowledgebase
leads nowhere. How can the update be made successful and exactly what
benefits am I missing without these updates? Guidance sought

The suggested link for .NET 2 did not work. The message that the task could
not be completed because of ongoing processeses. The message does not
specify what processeses are involved. Continues guidance sought.

That's a common problem with error messages and even log messages;
they lack context. To get the most context activate verbose logging for
an update and supplement that context by tracing the update's activities
with ProcMon.
However, for the particular update that you are trying there may already be
an abundance of logging available. All you may need to do is look for it.
E.g. after the update runs search for all files which changed on that day;
sort the results by Date Modified (which includes a timestamp); hence you
can then scroll to find all the files which the update created or modified.
Etc.
Good luck

Before going any further, I would like to explain that .NET Framework
version 3.0 extends .NET Framework version 2.0 with new features,
improvements to existing features, and enhancements to the documentation.
Nevertheless, if .Net Framework 2.0 cannot be installed, we cannot install
..Net Framework 3.0 either. At this time, let's refer to the following steps
to remove any corrupted .NET framework components and install .NET Framework
2.0 instead firstly. If .Net Framework 2.0 can be installed successfully, we
can go ahead and install .Net Framework 3.0.
The issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. At this time,
let's refer to the following steps to troubleshoot it:
Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
============================================
1. Visit: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...BD/msicuu2.exe
2. Save the file on the Desktop.
3. Please double click the msicuu2.exe file to install it on the computer.
After that, please perform the following suggestions to reinstall .NET
Framework 2.0 and its updates.
Step 3: Reinstall .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package and its
updates
================================================== ==============
Please download and install the following updates in order.
Note: When the "File Download" window appears, please click Save, and follow
the directions to save the file on the Desktop. After downloading all the
setup files, please double-click on each one to install them.
