Default Unknown origin Auto Update Message

Everyday (once), I receive an Auto Update box. If I click update, nothing
happens...same if I cancel.

I have run any number of spyware etc utilities that find nothing. I have
attempted to turn off some services, etc....but the problem remains.

Suggestions welcome!

Without actually seeing this " Auto Update box " it's hard to advise you
on just what is going on.
Does the yellow update icon appear in the system tray, you click it, and
the update GUI opens or does it just open of it's own accord ?
Is it the genuine Microsoft Windows Update GUI or 3rd party ?
What *specifically* does it say ?

If it's the XP update GUI it will list which updates are available to be
downloaded/installed.

Has the system been kept updated ?
Open Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel
Make sure the " Show updates " box towards the top of the window is checked
Scroll down towards the bottom and look under " Windows XP - Software
Updates "
Post the last update listed and the date it was installed, please.

No update icon...it appears on its own accord.

My guess is not MS.

(All in shades of grey)

Updates are Ready for your Computer

Then buttons OK and Cancel.

Hmmmm ... can you do a screen capture and post it so we can see what
this 'Auto Update' GUI looks like ?
It *may* be malware causing this. It might also possibly be a 3rd party
software/driver update GUI.

Hi MowGreen,

I finally figured it out. It was MXtask that generated this, from the
SystemSuite of VCOM...a similar product to Norton etc. for system
protection.

Cool. Nice detective work. Check out VCOM's Support page to see what the
mystery update window means.

Doesn't sound like a program I'd want to use, if it throws up
anonymous message dialogs you waste hours trying to ID.
