Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100

I am running Windows XP sp2 on my laptop. I plugged my external hard drive
into my laptop and the hard drive of the laptop crashed. When i rebooted i
got the following error:

Disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Del to restart.

I have tried to boot from window XP disk but the following message is
returned:

INF File txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing status 4096.
So i cant get to the recovery console.

I am unable to run in safe mode - pressing F8 to no avail.

Although i can get to the c drive, none of the DOS commands are recognised.

I can however get to the BIOS. Is there anything in there i can change to
get my hard drive back?

Some BIOS'es have an annoying feature where if a new hard
drive is detected the Boot Sequence will get automatically set
to use the newly detected device or scramble the previously
set sequence. The Disk Read error may be the result of the PC
trying to boot the external drive.

I'd go through the BIOS setup and make sure only the internal
drive is selected and disable any Boot to USB features.

The boot priority is as follows:

HDD>FDD>CD-ROM>LAN
HDD PRIORITY = BUILT IN HDD>SECOND HDD

there is no mention of USB drives in the boot priority. what should i do
next?

That sequence should properly load XP from the notebook's
hard drive. I would boot to the Windows XP CD-ROM and
take "R" for Recovery Console. Once booted type:
>Chkdsk C: /R [Enter]
Then remove the CD and attempt a normal boot. If no success
it's possible the Drive or other hardware has failed.

This is on your external hard drive? If yes, it has died. Replace it,
install Windows, restore data from backups.

Don't Panic!

Depending on how much data is on your System Volume and the
level of inconsistencies that is an extremely long time for Chkdsk
to process. This isn't a good sign, as Chkdsk can and does make
changes that can sometimes result in data being lost. Hopefully you
have a backup of your data. I neglected to include the warning that
Chkdsk with a /Repair qualifier can cause irreversible changes to
the drive.
