The tooltips for icons in the system tray area of the taskbar are not
visible. I can see them behind the taskbar (the tops just barely show), but
they don't appear on top of the taskbar as they should. XP Pro SP2. I have
AutoHide checked, but the problem persists either way.

= 1- Right click Desktop select Properties and on the Display properties click
on
Desktop Tab then click Customize Desktop.
On the Desktop Items click on Web Tab and be sure all boxes unchecked there.
Then click on Appearance Tab then Effects button. On the Effects window be
sure the settings been set to suite your requirements.
On the Effect Windows select these boxes:
[ √ ] Use the following transition effect for menus and Tooltips:
[ Fade effect ][v]
[ √ ] Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:
[ Standard ][v]
[ ] Use Large Icons
[ √ ] Show shadows under menus
[ √ ] Show window contents while dragging
[ √ ] Hide underlined letters for keyboard navigation until I press the Alt
Key
2- In the Control Panel click Tools >> Folder Options then click on View under
this option:
[&] Files and Folders
[ √ ] Display Simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list and close the
Folder Options window and Reboot your computer
3-Right click on Desktop >>"Arrange Icons by" and make sure Lock Web
items is unchecked.
Please perform one step (1,2,3) at a time and Hit F5 to refresh and see if
the issue been resolved.

Most of my settings were already as detailed above, save the Use Large Icons
setting. Unfortunately, changing it did not help. Thanks for trying!

When I had Windows ME it was a bug then so I don't think MS are going to fix
it ever.
Mike.
Not sure if it helps you but I have tried it many times.
1. Click Start - point to All Programs
2. Right-click on any item and then click "Sort by Name"
Now, check if your tooltips are visible.
Hope this help, let us know!

Not that I know of, but I'm not privy to Microsoft's plans.

A well known bug, I doubt if it will get fixed. That is only a guess based
on the fact that it has been there from the beginning. From Start | All
Programs right click on one and choose sort by name. That resets the Z
order and for many fixes the issue until the next time. Another fix is log
out then log back in...until the next time.

Thanks - logging off and back on fixed it. I guess I will just refrain from
right clicking items on the start menu ;-)
