no answer from previous post so trying again..on bootup CHKDSK appears and
does files ok but stops at indexes but with much disk activity..so have to
reboot and cancel CHKDSK to get to windows which then works ok...SO what can
be done....
Re: is there ANYBODY who can help with CHKDSK problem
How big is your drive and how long have you let chkdsk run?

Re: is there ANYBODY who can help with CHKDSK problem
Phase 2 can take a good bit of time to complete, depending on how
many files are on your system volume. Halting an operation like that
isn't a good idea. Just because Windows loads/runs doesn't mean the
volume has no issue(s).
Chkdsk can report some issues that are due to the fact that Chkdsk
doesn't have exclusive use of the drive. The boot time Chkdsk with
a /F or /R qualifier should avoid that.
My advice is the run the full 5-Phase Chkdsk and allow it to finish
it's check of drive. NEVER - run a /F or /R Chkdsk unless the data
on the drive is backed up/verified. Chkdsk can and does remove any
data it considers corrupted or invalid to get a "Clean" status.

Re: is there ANYBODY who can help with CHKDSK problem
You didn't say how long she let it run. Has it been left to run its
complete cycle? It can take quite a bit of time when it is checking the
indexes, several hours is not unusual, you have to be patient and let it
run its course. Otherwise follow David B.'s advice, run a manufacturers
diagnostic test on the disk, it may be failing and may need to be
replaced. Make sure that your wife has a backup of her important files!
If the disk is failing she is at a high risk of loosing *all* the data
on the disk!

"For several weeks, users in our security forum have been discussing a
problem with Kaspersky Anti-Virus they say the company refuses to properly
address. At fault is the company's iSwift technology, which speeds up virus
scans by tagging (NTFS-identifiers) certain files and tracking whether
they've been changed (and thus need to be rescanned).
According to forum users, the technology all but breaks CHKDSK
functionality, and the changes are permanent even if you uninstall the
software. Kaspersky blames Microsoft for the problem, but our forum
regulars insist the problem is Kaspersky's."
Re: is there ANYBODY who can help with CHKDSK problem
just to say you were so right and leaving CHKDSK to run as long as it wanted
worked a charm so again thank you
