System hangs at "loading personal settings" if network enabled.
I'm finding that when I log in, the system hangs at the "loading personal
settings" stage, but ONLY if I have my network connection enabled. If I log
in with the connection disabled, and then enable it, everything works fine.
I have tried both dynamic and fixed network address settings, to no avail.
Tried from a different user account as
well - same problem. Found a KB article about network shares and ALT-TAB - I
tried ALT-TAB but no dialog box appears, so that doesn't appear to be my
problem either.
It is a home PC, connected via an embedded Intel PRO/100 VE adaptor to a DSL
modem/router.
I've had this problem for a very long time, and I'm getting sick of it.

The best way to deal with this problem is to use System Restore
***immediately*** when it happens rather than waiting for a
very long time before taking action.
You may be able to fix it by uninstalling all network components,
followed by a re-installation.

Here's something to try: If you don't share printers and files with
other computers on a network, disable "Client for Microsoft Networks"
and "File and Printer Sharing". Also disable any NIC that isn't being used.
