Default shutting down xp

when I shut down windows xp it has started stalling. It is simple enough to
click the start button, then the turn off my computer, and the process
starts. A few things close then it stops and I have to click the same
process again. The second time the computer turns off. any help resolving
this would be helpfull. It's not a big deal but it's a pain. Thanks
