Search in Windows Explorer - A Bug?

Is there a max to the number of files that Windows explorer can handle when
doing a search after for example .doc files on a network drive?

I am trying to get an overview of how many files in different formats that
are stored on a network drive.

I define the search in advanced options, launch it, and Explorer begins to
work. After some time it reaches the number 22.305 of the file type in
question, and then it begins to act strange. The computer slows down to a
point where it almost freezes, and the Task Manager CPU Usage History
threatens to go off the scale with the usage graph showing 100%. Evey now and
then it goes down a little, but then back to 100%.

I am running Windows XP SP1 in a corporate environment.

Anybody out there who has encountered this problem? If so, please enlighten
me. What is going on?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi Shinano,

I'm not sure what the limit is on network searching for Windows XP.
However, before you try troubleshooting too many different things, I would
suggest applying SP2 and post-SP2 updates and see if the problem still
exists. In any case, 22,000+ files is a lot, and I'm not surprised that
Windows is having trouble handling more than that. Maybe you need to
re-think how to get the information you're looking for. I doubt the "Search"
function was designed to deal with that high a number of files -- you might
have to use a special program for that purpose, or come up with a better
method.

Thank you for your reply. We agree. SP2 and other updates should be applied.
Unfortunately, that is beyond the limitations on my profile, and so I have to
deal with the tools that are immediately available to me. In this case:
Windows Explorer.

Do you - or anybody else for that matter - have other suggestions? I highly
appreicate any advice.

I searched for * & found 35000+ no problem.
