Default Realtek AC97 sound drivers

I recently had to reinstall XP due to too many software conflicts.
All the hardware was working properly though.
Now I have a clean install of XP SP2 with the latest patches but I
can't get the sound drivers to work.
I installed a driver for my motherboard 865M-G8 and the new hw wizard
now recognizes my onboard
sound card as Realtek AC97 and installs drivers for it automatically.
However it appears with a 'question mark' in device manager and the
status window
under properties says 'failed to start'.
I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling but to no avail.
I am thinking it's a driver issue as I had sound working prior to
reinstalling windows,
but not sure what to try next.

Any help would be appreciated

Marius

Please say what "hw wizard" are you using. I'm not sure what version of the
audio system I have. Diagnostics don't give it. Add/Remove gives a version
numberbut that may be only original driver version. TIA,

The 'New Hardware Wizard' is the dialog that pops up on its own
each time you connect new hardware and you can see which drivers
you currently have installed in Control Panel -> System -> Device
manager.

BUT if your sound is not working you'll want to know what sound card
you actually have there and for that you'll need to open the box and
look.
