I'm running Windows XP - when i open /search through folders i tend to
get an error where everything on screen enlarges by about 10 times (as
if you set the sreen resolution to something like 10000 x 10000). This
usually happens also when Firefox is open. Very annoying as i can't
close down Windows due to their size or even restart the PC - I have
to turn it off and start again.
Is this a virus or a registry error? How could I fix this?

Alt/F4 will close the currently selected window.
I would try reinstalling your graphics card drivers to see if that cured
the main problem. If that doesn't work, try lowering graphics hardware
acceleration. You can find that slide in DXDiag, or in Screen Properties.
