PC crashes whilst running Windows Memory Diagnostic
Hello all,
My pc has recently been having problems, initially found during video
rendering but now apparently random crashes make me think things are
getting worse. I have put some info about my system at the end of this
post.
I can run the Prime95 torture test for 12 hours without a problem.
I can run Memtest86+ ok also.
However when I try to run Windows Memory Diagnostic it always fails at
the same point - the computer just hangs so I don't get an error
message, just a frozen screen with some of the top lines corrupted. It
fails very early in the 4th test, I suspect at the exact same point
each time. I can't recall the name of this test, but it's the one
dealing with testing using a chess board grid of squares of data.
Any ideas on what part of my machine is failing this?
Many thanks for any help.
My pc: Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-7VT600-1394 KT600 DDR400 400fsb x8AGP.
Athlon XP 3200+, 2.21 GHz
Memory: (original)
512 MB DDR SDRAM PC 2700 (DDR 333)3

You do not give details of the new RAM save for the ammount.

Hope this helps.

PassMark BurnInTestT is a software tool that allows all the major
sub-systems of a computer to be simultaneously (or independently)
stress tested for endurance, reliability and stability. It looks like
running the Graphics test would be a good place to start in your case. http://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm

Re: PC crashes whilst running Windows Memory Diagnostic
Winny
What Error / Warning reports ( if any ) appear in the System log in
Event Viewer when you last booted the machine?
Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.
Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information. http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Re: PC crashes whilst running Windows Memory Diagnostic
Thanks Gerry - will investigate your suggestions tonight.
Last night I did more testing:
Passmark Burn-in test ran ok apart from once when it crashed the pc
requiring the reset button. I tried Passmark with various combinations
of tests on and off, and several times with everything running
(including 2D and 3D graphics and video playback).
I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic again and got my usual crash part way
through the Stride6 test. However before going to bed I ran it again
with the cache option off. It was still running before leaving for
work this morning but had got well beyond the Stride6 and was nearing
completion of the 6th and final test with no errors so far.
Could it be a cache problem? I don't understand how caching works.
Re: PC crashes whilst running Windows Memory Diagnostic
two cents: it sounds to me like either a heat or power issue. adding the
extra mem may have pushed you beyound the limits. I would try a few
things: get a temp monitor program that's compatable w/ your MoBo and
take a look at the temps. If temps are fine, and if your MoBo allows it,
bump up the voltage to the ram by 1 tick (typically .25 volt). Note that
will cause a bit more heat tho.
Memtest86 saying it passes is good, but it may be just on the edge. When
in doubt let memtest86 run for 24 hours, box closed so cooling is normal.
While this will stress the ram it won't stress the PowSup, so if it passes
just fine then I'd definately start leaning toward a power issue.
What kind/size of power supply is in the box? You might want to go over
the MoBo and all the power connections; removing and reseating them can
wipe oxide off the pins and "clean" things up. In my experience many a
flakey box has been fixed by swapping in a new good-brand PS (not a
no-name!).

Message: Windows saved user %1 registry while an application or

unloaded when it is no longer in use.
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try

Explanation
Windows unloads each user's profile and user's section of the registry
when the user logs off. This message indicates that Windows could not
unload the user's profile because a program was referencing the user's
section of the registry. This locked the profile. The registry cannot
unload profiles that are locked and in use. When the program that is
locking the profile is no longer referencing the registry, the profile
will be unloaded.
