Default Open Office and alternatives

Good evening/morning experts,

I realize this is *not* the best NG for this, but I would like to get as
unbiased opinions as possible. Their NG's (Word, OO "may have their own
agends).

I would like opinions on WP Suites on the order of Office, Open Office, and
any others ones you may be familar. Are there any pro/cons I should be
aware of. Any quircky qlitches?

Are most of these have the ability to handle "most" Office apps.?

As you can probably tell, i'm looking for freeware,--and I actually have
very little call for anything fancy.

My Many TIA,
Curt

I've used OpenOffice for many years on Linux, Windows, and OS X. I like
it a lot. Since it is free, you might as well try it. Other than that,
here's a sampling:

Curt, I've not used Open Office, and though it's installed I don't use MS
Word. I do use Excel and Powerpoint. For a Word Processor I have always
preferred WordPerfect. It's not free though.
