Default No login option to type password or select name

At the login screen, Windows asks to select a name and type in the password
but there is no prompt for name or password. this just happened recently -
every other time I was able to select the login and type in the password. I
can enter when I'm in safe mode. I've also lost other things such as
screensaver options, etc.

Any ideas - help would be greatly appreciated

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice, then enter your user name and password.
Now use System Restore to return the system to its state a few
days before the current problem started. You can do the same in
Safe Mode too.
