Default netapi32.dll error

I just got a new custom computer, running Windows XP Pro, RAID Stripe, AMD
processor, 2 GB memory, and my usual slow dialup connection. Every time I'm
online, I get an error message which will then ask to send a report or debug
or cancel. Debug doesn't work, and all options shut down the connection and
sound capability, necessitating a reboot. If I ignore the popup, I can stay
online, and eventually get another popup announcing an exception.

This happens whether I'm using email only or browser, either Firefox or IE.
Sometimes I can be online for half an hour before I get the error, sometimes
only a few minutes. Could this be a modem error? I'm using an older (2-3
years) modem.

Or could it be related to the original setup, which was on a network and
then switched to a single computer on dialup?

This has me baffled, and not a little irritated. I've already had to
reinstall the operating system once for an unrelated problem that I couldn't
resolve, and I don't want to do it again--but will if I have to. Any help
gratefully received. The only Windows updates I've put in so far are
KB912919 Security Update, Media Format Runtime, and Media Player 10.

Here's the details:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Why no updates to xp,SP2 might/would eliminate youre problem(s).Opened
event viewer lately, you might see alot of problems...Otherwise,R.click my
computer, properties, advanced, error reporting, check the box "disable error
reporting",close out.

Default RE: netapi32.dll error

Sorry, I misspoke. Of course I have SP2 installed. I consider that part of
a basic installation, so I was referring to updates beyond SP2. I haven't
done any other because I wanted to first figure out what's going on. With
dialup it takes hours to download updates, and I only want to do it once.

WRT error reporting, right now I lose sound and connectivity with the
errors. What would be the result of turning off the reporting? Wouldn't I
end up with the exception anyway, which will take out that functionality as
well?

Yikes, no updates past SP2 because of dial-up. Bugger! Well, if
netapi32.dll is bugging out you could always try getting it up to date
with KB939252: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939252. It's only a
782KB download. The hotfix file is WindowsXP-KB939252-x86-ENU. It's
possible that whatever's been fixed between netapi32.dll in SP2
(5.1.2600.2180) and the current build (5.1.2600.3175) might have fixed
your issue. If it's svchost.exe bugging out, sorry, you'll have to
wait on SP3.

Thanks, Wolf. I'll give that hotfix a try.

The problem was the disk itself. It contained the OS from my old computer.
I had it attached to a USB port so I could retrieve files from it.
Unfortnately, something in that arrangement, whether it was on at startup or
not, killed my internet connection.

I've removed the OS and have only the other files. Problem solved.
