MyDocs on second HDD drag and drop only copies, won't move

The normal behavior while dragging from desktop to mydocs folder is to move.
However, with my mydocs on a second HDD, the behavior has switched to copy.

Now when I want to move something from my desktop to mydocs, I first have to
drag and drop into the mydocs folder on my desktop, then I have to delete the
original from my desktop. Usually I check my mydocs folder to make sure the
copy went well before deleting the original. This is three steps instead of
one.

Is there any way to change this back to to the default behavior (i.e., move)?

I think your being a bit melodramatic there. How many people do you know
that this has happened to?
An external drive I would agree, but to an internal partition?

You can drag to the files to the other partition and hold the shift key then
release the mouse button. This will "move" the files to the destination.

From a data perspective, I'd prefer the copy then a move. As Malke
originally said, its better having a copy then not. That and I don't
think Windows treats another partition and another drive differently
when it comes to this issue.

No, I'm not being "melodramatic". I do professional tech support for a
living and I have done pro bono tech support in various MS newsgroups
for many years. Losing files because of moving instead of copying is
extremely common and there are nearly always Tears Before Bedtime from
the people who did it.

You and the OP can do what you like - caveat emptor and all that.

The folks that really scare me, are the ones that insist on using Cut
and Paste to "move" their files. I see them lose things frequently.
Occasionally I can find the "hidden" original. But usually they forgot
where the original was AND the correct name, so the search is for naught.
