Default my new XP Pro disc got SCRATCHED!!!! HELP!!!!!

I recently bought and installed a Windows XP Professional Disc, and soon
after I downloaded a virus, and unfortunately had to reformat my Hard Drive,
and start all over with a fresh install. The only problem is, when the setup
got a little over half way through, it stopped, saying my disc was damaged,
and it needed the file 'asms' before it could continue. Am I pretty much
SOL? Am I going to have to buy a whole new XP Program Disc? If there is
anyone who can help me, and possibly save me from having to spend money on a
new disc that i really don't have, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,
SuzIe

Suzie,
Is the disk really damaged or can it be cleaned? Plus I would clean the
CD/DVD Lens as that may be dirty.
I'm quite sure Microsoft have a system of replacing damaged/defective disks.
I think i read about it a few days ago here, but here is one link
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/bo...q/default.mspx.
IF you decide to return it to microsoft, Remember to get you story straight
before calling and I would send it by recorded/registered post so that if
they don't get it, you would be able to claim your loss. Though I don't know
how good microsoft are at keeping their promises...worst case they don't send
it to you in their specified time frame ( do ask them !) then it's off to the
small claims court.
Hope you sort it

Thanks Mani! I called HP's 800 number, and they will replace the OS disc for
$16-$20. Now I just need to borrow a credit card! Thanks again for all your
help!

If it's a retail product and the OP has proof of purchase then MS will help.
How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com

If it's an OEM version then the OP has to contact the OEM from which she got
it. Which seems to be how the OP resolved it.
