Default lost sound and plug and play software device enumerator

I've just reinstalled XP home and SP2 but my sound is gone, tried
uninstalling and reinstalling my audio drivers (vinyl AC'97) with no joy.
In device manager the plug and play software device enumerator has an
exclamation mark, properties tell me that;
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the
drivers
required for this device. (Code 31)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

any advice would be useful, don't particularly want to reinstall xp yet again

i suspect you have the wrong drivers. Did you load from the manufacturer's
website?
