Default Laptop Won't Go To Sleep

I have a Dell 600M laptop with WinXP Pro and with SP3. I can't get it to go
to sleep. I think this problem started after installing SP3. Any ideas?

PA Bear,
Thank you for the reply. But that didn't solve the problem. I reinstalled
the wireless card drivers and the sleep mode worked once. Then not again.

Does the behavior persist after uninstalling WinXP SP3?

PA Bear,
I uninstalled SP3 and the screen saver works once and not again. I
reinstalled the wireless card driver and again screen saver worked once.
Another thing that is happening is that the PC seems to get in a mode where
an application can be started, but then it becomes non responsive. Even the
Task Manager becomes non responsive. The way to get out of it is to do CTRL
Alt Del and press cancel. Then all is OK again. Something is seems broken.
