PA Bear,
Thank you for the reply. But that didn't solve the problem. I reinstalled
the wireless card drivers and the sleep mode worked once. Then not again.

Does the behavior persist after uninstalling WinXP SP3?
How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249
============================
Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.

PA Bear,
I uninstalled SP3 and the screen saver works once and not again. I
reinstalled the wireless card driver and again screen saver worked once.
Another thing that is happening is that the PC seems to get in a mode where
an application can be started, but then it becomes non responsive. Even the
Task Manager becomes non responsive. The way to get out of it is to do CTRL
Alt Del and press cancel. Then all is OK again. Something is seems broken.

You seem to have bigger problems than computer not going to sleep
