Evidently I have an old version of Itunes (4.2.0.74) which came with my
computer purchased three years ago. I am being prompted to download an
updated version of the program which I can't seem to do properly.
What is the function of Itunes? If I uninstall it, will I notice any change
in my day to day system operation? I rarely use the audio on my computer -
keep it turned off except for the occasional holiday e-mail.
Any basic help to understand what Itunes is all about appreciated.

iTunes is primarily used with an iPod. It came bundled with Apple QuickTime.
If you don't have an iPod you can safely remove it.

Unk
"I doubt it" would have been a sufficient reply. No need to get nasty.
Believe it or not, I did google iTunes and read the information at the
various sites also scanned through the questions and answers pertaining to
iTunes. None of them answered my concern - i.e. that uninstalling iTunes
might adversely affect the smooth operation of my computer. I thought that
since iTunes had come loaded on my computer that it might be somehow
integrated into the XP system.
In any event, the answers/comments of this forum have given me the
confidence to uninstall without consequent problems.
Many thanks to you, "Fuzzy Logic" "Malke" and "Uncle Grumpy" for the good
advice.
