Default Indexing Service and Search

If I enable "Indexing Service for faster searches" on myhard drive I get no
search results. Even if I search on *.* the search returns no results after
1 second. If I turn off Indexing Service, then the search appears to work.

What is wrong with my indexing service? How can i fix it?
thanks for any tips.
