incoming fax answers but disconnected

when I first got this computer i set it up for fax. i have since disengaged
fax machine and software but incoming phone calls (on second ring) engages
fax tone. any suggestions.

Have you checked Services to see if the fax is there and if it's set to
Automatic?

You need to go to Control Panel/Phone and Modem Options (classic vies)
and set your modem to NOT answer calls.
