I've was advised to reinstall windows (as a last resort) by a my tech friend
using the recovery disc that came with the pc. I have done this but do I need
to install drivers spearately? I am asking because after installing windows
no audio device could be found.
I bought the pc from Watford Electronics 5 years ago but I can't ask them
for hemp because they have been bought out. The new company doesn't appear to
be up and running yet.
Does anyone know if I ought to find the drivers (if indeed I need to install
manually) on the recovery cd or on the floppy labelled 'Promise 376 Serial
ATA Driver'? I can't see a way to install from this floppy.
I reinstalled windows once before when I had an Evesham pc and the tech guys
there talked me through the whole process./

If it's an actual recovery CD, the drivers should be installed
automatically. If it's an XP install CD, you would need to install
motherboard drivers and then device drivers.
The Promise disk would have drivers only for the SATA hardware. Drivers
for other hardware would either be on a CD or in the recovery image.
You can use Belarc Advisor to figure out what the board is (or open teh case
and look at the model number) and then go to the manufacturer's site adn
downlod them. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Thanks Patrick. The disc says recovery disc.I would have thought the drivers
were on there and would load automatically. Don't know why it didn'tdetect
audio device.

The drivers should be there.
Do you have onboard audio or a separate sound card?
Also, what motherboard do you have? And if there's a separate sound
card, what is it?

It's a long way for a bad joke; you had a somewhat amusing typo, mentioning
that you couldn't go to the original vendor for "hemp".
In some jurisdictions, that's another term for cannabis products.
