I have a Compaq desktop w/XP Home, with Service pack 2. I cannot seem to
clear hard drive space which states that it is too full to even do a disk
cleanup. I have already done disk cleanup before that and deleted all file's
and programs. In my computer: used 3.77 GB, fr4ee 231 MB, Total sige is 4.00
GB and only 5% free on disk. I've tried to defrag and system would not let me
because of the low disk space. In system info it has total physical 256 MB,
Available Physical, 133.49 MB, Available Virtual 1.96 GB and total Virtual
2.00 GB. Page file space is 611.20 MB. Processor i AMD 3D processore 394 MHZ,
252 Ran wi NTSF file system, FAT 32. Also done a disk error check and it
fixed a small amout of cluster files. Can anyone guide on what to do to get
this disk free? This is my Dad's computer and I don't have the original
Window XP disk. Help me Please!
4.0 Gigabytes is too small to effectively run Windows and most of
the common applications. There are some items that take up space
you can remove but long term you're only postponing the eventual
move to a larger drive. One item is doing an SFC /Purgecache this
will return around ~500 Megabytes of space. The command needs
to be done from a Command Prompt window.
A PATA ( Parallel ATA ) drive is very inexpensive. An 80-Gig
drive can be bought for under ~$50.

Can you tell me how to do that; the SFC/Purgecache, do I type that as you put
it at the command line. That will help all he wants to do is play solitaire
and check email from family. He's 82yrs old. Thank you for your reply

Click Start, Run ( Type ) Cmd [Enter]

*Effectively this impacts Windows File Protection, so if any
monitored files need replacing you'll be prompted for your
Windows XP CD-ROM, something you mentioned you do
not have.

There's got to be some other way to clean this up. I don't understand why
this Compaq computer that is running Windows XP would not have enough disk
space to run XP in the first place. He bought this computer at a garage sale
and it seem ok other than had a lot of junk on it, so I deleted music sites
and all files associated with every on the internet and did a virus and
spyware scan. It virtually had no programs on it left. Adobe, Avast, Spyware
Terminator, webflds xp, that's it other Windows Movie Maker. Every time I go
and delete the window defrags show only 2% now and it is actually working
now. Any other input on what I just wrote or am I just out of luck. Thanks

I thought is was working, but it stopped and asked if I should run anyway?
Should I try that?

Lower System Restore's allocated space ( 12% ) of the system volume
or turn it off completely. Check if Hibernation is enabled - it will use a
size equal to the Physical RAM in the PC. You can also purge any of
the Hotfix backups that get applied by Windows/Microsoft Update in
the \Windows folder EXCEPT the folder $hf_mig$. The hotfixes appear
as a $_____ folder. There are also driver roll back entries that can be
taken off, but loose the roll back capability. These are found in the path
\Windows\System32\ReinstallBackups
Anything beyond these steps may adversely affect the PC. At a bare
minimum XP will still use around ~2.4 Gigabytes of disk space.

System Restore settings are found by Right Clicking My Computer,
taking Properties. When the Details box opens - click the System
Restore (TAB). Resize with the Settings button or tic/check the
option box "Turn off System Restore on all Drives" to disable SR.
Hotfixes are not normally shown by Explorer. You have to toggle
3 Folder option View settings to Show Hidden, System files and
unhide protected extensions. Once changed you navigate to the
\Windows folder and remove the $____ sub folders except for the
one I mentioned in an earlier reply.
Hibernation is controlled from the Power Options in Control Panel.
Once opened you'll see a Hibernation (TAB). It may or may not be
enabled based on your PC's supported Sleep states.
