Folder Views in Explorer extend to desktop program groups

I have Windows Explorer set to display hard disk directories or folders as
"details". However, what this is doing is to display what were icons for
programs in folders or program groups (say, Control Panel for example) as a list
rather than icon view.

How can I force XP to display the icons in folders on the desktop as icons
rather than as a list in detail view?

Hi Marts,

In Explorer, click Tools, Folder Options, View tab. You can reset all
folders by clicking the "Reset all folders" button". Then you can
change folders individually. Clicking "Apply to All Folders" will set
your current folder view to all folders, which is probably what you did
after setting your folders up.

I used to do this but got sick of continually having to change the view type
from icon to details every time I looked in a directory.

In the past Windows would allow you to view desktop "folders" in icon view while
folders or directories, when viewed in Windows Explorer, would be viewed however
you had WE configured, in my case, this was details and "applied to all
folders". This never affected desktop views.

With XP, this has changed.

I don't have any problem configuring individual folders. You can set
one to be the default for all folders, or configure each one
individually. What can't you do now? It has to be the way you are
attempting to do it. I have all my folders configured a certain way,
but it doesn't affect the Desktop.

The desktop's program folders or groups or whatever you're s'posed to call 'em
these days, when opened display all the items as if I'm looking a files, rather
than icons.

That's how I prefer to view a hard disk and its directories, as it's easier to
see what's what, sort by name, type or date modified.

I've since reset it to defaults and am now viewing each folder via details as I
open each one. I'll see if it stays this way, or when I next log on to the
computer whether it's changed back to icons for all folders and desktop.
