You can *not* use a "DSL modem" to send faxes. If you have a fax modem,
you *might* be able to send faxes (if Windows XP Fax Services likes your
modem). Connect the fax modem either to a separate telephone line or to
the telephone line connected to your DSL modem (on the wall side of the
DSL modem) using a splitter and one of the filters supplied by your ISP
or available from various electronic supply houses. Note that you
*must* have filters for each telephone device (including your fax modem)
that is connected to the same telephone line (anywhere in the whole
house) that serves your DSL modem.
Otherwise, use an Internet fax service. Use Google to find them.
Don't believe that you can Fax with a DSL modem only an analog modem which
is probably already installed in your system (as you said.) Plug it into a
standard telephone jack just like your telephone is plugged into. Use XP's
Fax printer to send the fax. Click Start, Programs, Accessories,
Communications, Fax, Fax Console, Tools, Configure Fax to set it up for
first use. After that print using the fax printer in your printer dropdown
list.

Have your XP CD handy when you go to enable the fax as it will ask for it.

DSL is digital and can only be used with high speed Internet access,
over a DSL service line.
Fax needs a standard analog voice / fax line. Most DSL 'service"
access lines are usually voice / fax grade lines, unless the DSL
services provides a 'dry DSL' loop (no analog signals.) Can "share"
the DSL line since voice / fax signals are sent over different
"signals." You just need to set up a splitter and a DSl "filter" on
the "fax" split.
Most versions of MS Fax are "usually" not installed automatically.
You need to add Fax from the XP install media.

If the OP is willing to get VoIP telephone service on top of
his DSL broadband internet service, the VoIP will accommodate
FAXing. FAX signals are just analog audio signals, and they will
be carried by any VoIP service - whether provided by cable,
DSL, or powerline broadband service. The only limitation would
be by some sort of audio filtering that eliminates some of the
frequencies used by FAX but not used by the human voice. But
I checked with Time Warner on that, and the sales rep said that
TW's telephone service (i.e. VoIP) will carry FAX.
Otherwise, the OP can just use the voice half of his DSL
line to do the FAXing, with the usual filter on the voice branch
as you point out.
