External Hardrive

Can't get my system (XP Prof) to recognize my external harddrive (maxtor
personal storage 3100) - printer works just fine in the usb port(s)

Microsoft has a hotfix for service pack 1 but I'm running sercive pack 2, so
it won't let me use the hotfix - I'm considering unistalling servicepack 2
and trying the hotfix

Any other ideas?

All SP1 hot fixes are in SP2.

Has it been formatted?

Right-click 'My Computer' > Manage > Storage > Disk Management

Do you see your connected USB drive there? If you do, partition and format
the drive as NTFS.
