I installed a seagate freeagent 250gb external harddrive and at first
installation it was recognezed and called drive f. After a shut down and or
restart/boot it is not recognized and an error comes up saying that one of
the usb devices installed has malfunctioned. I had my system tested and also
the external harddrive. All was declared in great working order but when I
returned home and reinstalled the external harddrive it was again recognized
and again after a shutdown and reboot it was not recognized again. When it
was tested it worked in all the usb ports. I am going nuts trying to get
this external hard drive to get recognized and stay that way. Does anyone
have suggestions?
When you get it recognised, see how it looks by opening Computer Management
in Administrative tools - go to the Disk Management icon.
Depending on your love of the supplied software from Seagate - you can
probably not use any of it.
Just format it as a primary NTFS partition using the above Disk Management
tool.
Assign a drive letter further away like "S:" by using the same tool (right
click on the drive graphic).
