Dual Monitors - windows stuck between the two monitors

I have an external monitor connected to my laptop. Every time I open a
program that has alternate modules (windows) and click on a new module it
opens between the two monitors and therefore must be moved onto on of the
monitors to be used. Does anyone know of a way to change this so that each
new window opens in the same window as the parent program window.
